What is Nyepi? Bali’s Silent Day
If you’re coming to Bali, there’s one day you should know about — Nyepi.
It’s called the “Day of Silence,” and it’s something you probably won’t experience anywhere else.
For one full day, the entire island comes to a complete stop.
In 2026, Nyepi takes place from March 19 to the morning of March 20.
What actually happens?
No traffic.
No flights.
No shops open.
Even the beach is closed.
Everyone — including tourists — stays inside their hotel or accommodation.
At first it may sound restrictive, but once you experience it, it feels calm, quiet, and very different from the usual Bali atmosphere.
The night before
The day before Nyepi is the complete opposite.
You’ll see large statues called Ogoh-Ogoh carried through the streets, with music and crowds.
It’s lively, loud, and full of energy.
Then the next day becomes completely silent.
That contrast is what makes the experience unique.
Can you surf on Nyepi?
No — surfing is not allowed on Nyepi.
The beach is closed, and everyone needs to stay indoors.
Best timing if you want to surf
If you’re planning to surf in Bali:
- Before Nyepi: enjoy the lively atmosphere
- After Nyepi: calm, clean conditions
At Orange Surf School Bali, we run private lessons every day except Nyepi.
Thinking of trying surfing?
If it’s your first time, don’t worry.
Most of our guests are beginners, and many stand up during their first lesson.
You don’t need to bring much — just yourself, a swimsuit, and a towel.
We take care of the rest.
If you have any questions or want to book, feel free to message us on WhatsApp.
A different side of Bali
Nyepi isn’t just a holiday.
It’s one of those rare moments where the entire island slows down completely.
If your trip overlaps with it, it’s worth experiencing.
